Open Grid Europe–s investment in Werne

Werne compressor station, the largest in the Open Grid Europe system, forms the node of 13 pipelines that transport natural gas, inter alia, from the Netherlands and the North Sea into the Ruhr region and further in the direction of southern Germany. Following a two-year planning and construction phase, a gas turbine-driven compressor unit is currently being replaced. The new unit has a gas turbine with a rating of 7.7 MW (10,300 PS).
Use of this modern, highly efficient turbine fitted with a state-of-the-art, low-NOx combustion system greatly reduces the station–s emissions. Start-up of the new compressor unit is scheduled for early October 2011. In 2012, another identical compressor unit will be replaced in Werne.
With this measure, Open Grid Europe is making an important contribution to the further development of the European gas pipeline system. About 25 billion m³ of gas pass through the Werne station every year.

Open Grid Europe, a subsidiary of E.ON Ruhrgas AG based in Essen, is Germany–s leading gas transmission company. With its ultra-modern, efficient system of approx. 12,000 km of pipeline and comprehensive technical services, Open Grid Europe offers and arranges innovative, forward-looking transportation solutions for natural gas and biomethane.
